Wedding Photography Boclair House Bearsden – Catriona & Thomas
Wedding Photography
at Boclair House, Bearsden
Catriona & Thomas
7th September 2024
A first for me photographing at Boclair House in Bearsden, Glasgow, and it did not disappoint! In this blog I will talk through the full wedding day, from start to finish and show you what can be captured during a full day wedding.
Boclair House is a stunning Bearsden wedding venue! It is one of Glasgow’s most magnificent buildings, situated at the foot of Boclair Hill and surrounded by 2 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. Located near the heart of Glasgow, this Tudor Gothic Mansion is simply perfect for the wedding of your dreams. The staff were incredible and the day went without a single hitch!
Catriona and her bridesmaids got ready at Cat’s parents house in Newton Mearns, while Thomas and the boys got ready elsewhere, so it was logistically impossible to capture the boys getting ready on this occasion!
As with all full day weddings, I arrive when hair and makeup arrive, so I have as much time as possible to capture all the fun prep, the detail shots and any dress shots.
For this Wedding I arrived at 9:30am and left the venue at 9:30pm with a break while dinner was served. On this occasion we couldn’t make a face-to-face meeting work due to geography, but we had a zoom call about 8 weeks before so we could chat about what Cat & Thomas wanted from their wedding photography. They also filled in a detailed questionnaire before so I knew any group shots or really important shots they wanted.

The Beginning….
I started the day at Catriona’s Mum’s house where all the ladies (and her dad!) were getting ready! I was warmlmy welcomed with a coffee and bacon roll, which is always appreciated! While hair & makeup were going on in the dining room, I set about capturing all the beautiful little details that this wedding brought! A gorgeous hamper with cat & Tom’s initials, Catriona’s Gran’s vintage violin and a beautiful veil were all quickly clocked and put to good use!
One of the most beautiful things to photograph was the framed music written by Cat’s sister Caitlin especially for their wedding day. Caitlin is an accomplished musician and piper, and she piped her sister and new husband into the reception using this piece of music. This is something so special, so I chose to take some ring shots on the piece of music.
One of my favourite moments of any wedding day is when the bride puts her dress on, and months of planning and dreaming become so very real. The emotions you can capture are just so real and so beautiful. A first look with her dad was always a must have shot, and it did not disappoint. As always, I plan out how this shot will work as soon as I arrive, because if it’s happening, I want it to be perfect! In this case, we managed to get Dad’s reaction, a reflection of Cat, and the girls peeking through the internal window!
The Middle…
With the bride not getting ready in the venue, my leaving time is always in the photography schedule to make sure I get to the venue in plenty of time to check out the ceremony room, chat with the groom (or significant other!) Nothing on a wedding day is winged, it is planned with as much attention to detail as the day itself!
But as with most weddings, it doesn’t always exactly to plan, but I made it to Boclair in plenty time to speak to the Minister, talk to the videographer and capture some venue shots. The ceremony was a lovely religious marriage and full of laughter and a few tears of joy!
It was an absolutely beautiful September day and the sun was shining high in the sky, so after they were married (yay!) we could get that lovely confetti shot and attempt a full guest shot!
The Garden Party….
After the ceremony we headed out to the stunning gardens to attempt the hardest part of any wedding…a full guest shot!! We also spent a short bit of time getting any group shots. The sun behind the trees was absolutely glorious, so myself and the videographer headed down to the bandstand to get a few bridal shots!
I ‘let’ my bride and groom loose for a little while to mingle with their guests while I captured some lovely candid moments. When they’d had a little bit of time, I stole them away again for some bridal shots while their guests mingled! There are so many beautiful parts of Boclair that it’s hard to make sure they’re never away from their guests for too long!
The Speeches….
This is one of my favourite parts of the day and it’s always, without fail, the part where you get laughter and tears! And this wedding was no exception! I love shooting these completely candid moments where you can capture a loving glance, a look of pride, people peeing themselves with laughter, and it’s all just so natural and beautiful! It’s a deep honour to be an observer at someones wedding, so I make sure to capture as much of the joy as possible.
The bonus shots!
With a summer wedding, there is still enough heat and light to allow for the guests to mingle outside during turnaround, but this is very unusual for September. What’s even more unusual is we get a golden hour, but this was exactly what we were gifted! It also allowed for some lovely candid shots when people are a little looser, and this cracking friend group shots that are just a total bonus!
I even managed to persuade the couple, with the help of Caitlin, to let me get some dusk shots in the bandstand before the party started! A very happy end to a wedding in my book!
The Party!
Another favourite part of the day for me, the paaaaaartay! I usually stay for 4-5 dances, but sometimes there’s just too much fun to capture and I simply can’t walk away! On this occasion, there was the most amazing ceilidh band, Jiggered Ceilidh Band who made the party photography go on and on, and I was sooo happy!!
There was a wonderful first dance for Cat & Tom, and a very emotional first dance with her dad to boot! The ceilidh shots were as ceilidh shots always are, the epitomy of an incredible day!
